Lesson 2

Identify the customer

Describe one ideal customer segment with enough detail to find them.

Lesson preview

A customer segment is a group who shares the same problem and can be reached the same way. That second half is what people forget. If you cannot describe where the group gathers — a trade association, a supplier's mailing list, a specific neighborhood, a subreddit, a route you drive — you do not yet have a segment, you have a demographic. Start with one segment you can reach for free. A common mistake when choosing a segment is picking one that is emotionally appealing rather than practically reachable. An owner might feel drawn to serve "young entrepreneurs" because it sounds exciting, without having any actual channel to reach that group cheaply. A less glamorous but reachable segment, such as members of a specific local trade group you already belong to, will almost always outperform an appealing but unreachable one in the first year. You can judge whether a segment is truly usable by trying to name the exact next step to reach ten of them by tomorrow. If you can point to a specific list, group, event, or location, the segment is real. If your answer is something vague like "social media" with no specific account, hashtag, or community named, you likely still have a demographic dressed up as a segment. When a chosen segment turns out to be hard to reach even after real effort, resist widening the definition further, since that usually makes the reach problem worse, not better. Instead, look sideways for a segment with the same core problem that gathers somewhere more accessible, such as switching from targeting individual homeowners to targeting the property managers who already have hundreds of them on one list. A pet photographer originally targeted "dog owners who love photography," a segment with no clear gathering point. After struggling for weeks, she noticed most of her early customers had come through a local dog rescue's adoption events. She shifted her segment to "families within one year of adopting from a specific rescue group," which the rescue was happy to introduce her to directly, giving her a repeatable, free channel that the original broad segment never offered.

Key takeaways

  • If you cannot describe where the group gathers — a trade association, a supplier's mailing list, a specific neighborhood, a subreddit, a route you drive — you do not yet have a segment, you have a demographic.
  • Start with one segment you can reach for free.
  • Reachability is what turns a description into a marketing plan.
